The region around Biggesee lake measures about 710 km². It is about 36 km from north to south and about 38 km from east to west. The lowest points in the region are in the community of Finnentrop at the mouth of the Bigge and Lenne which is 232 m above sea level and northwest of Rönkhausen which is 224 m above sea level.

The most important cities of the region are Olpe, Attendorn, and Lennestadt.

Over the years, Biggesee and some of the other nearby lakes have become tourist magnets. In addition to water sports (sailing, windsurfing, rowing, fishing, and diving) on and in Biggesee, the lake has two passenger ships. There are also two official diving sites, Weuste and Kraghammer Sattel. In addition, there are numerous biking and hiking trails around the lake and in the area. These see brisk activity, especially in summer. Many holidaymakers camp in the campgrounds around the lake.
