Siegerland

The Siegerland is a region in Nordrhein-Westfalen whose most important center is Siegen, a major city in southern Westphalia. The name of both the region and the city stems from the Sieg river, an arm of the Rhine that originates in the Rothaargebirge. Siegerland, like Sauerland, is extensively forested. The mountains in the north of Siegerland and south of Burbach are all higher than those in the rest of the region. But otherwise, the regions have identical landscapes. Small rivers or brooks flow through the valleys, surrounded by meadows and fields. The leafy forests were generally used for producing charcoal and the coniferous forest in the wood industry. The cuisine of the Siegerland features potatoes and an enormous variety of bread. The most striking specialty from Siegerland is a symbiosis of the two. The Riewekooche is a kind of potato bread that is related to the potato pancakes famous especially in the Rheinland. |
