Märkischer Kreis

The Märkischer Kreis includes the western section of the Sauerland.

In the north it is bordered by the Ruhr valley, while the southern part of the district is very hilly. The highest point is the Nordhelle in the Ebbe mountains, which is 663 meters above sea level. The most important rivers flowing through the district are the Lenne, Volme, Hönne, Lister, Oester and the Ruhr, which forms the border.

The culture of the Märkischer Kreis has traditionally been influenced by agriculture.

The largest Ice Age cave in Europe, the Balver Höhle, where the Balver Höhle Festival is held, is located in Balve.

The most famous cultural monument in Märkischer Kreis is Altena Castle. The Luisenhütte blast furnace is an important industrial historical monument. The caves in Hönnetal and Iserlohn are historically significant.
